Department of Anthropology
The course of anthropology was first taught by a German professor in the University of Tehran in 1937. It then developed into a centre for Nomadic Anthropology in 1957, and, finally, after the establishment of the Faculty of Social Sciences, continued as a department in which international scholars alongside Iranian professors engaged in research in different branches of anthropological studies.
Today, the Department of Anthropology is committed to fostering four main branches of anthropology – archaeology, biological anthropology, cultural anthropology, and linguistic anthropology.
Our goal is to produce researchers who can study social, cultural, biological, and linguistic characteristics of human societies within particular historical periods and geographies focusing on diverse phenomena including art, music, marriage, religion, economy, law, and various other significant aspects of our social life. At the same time, we emphasize the importance and ability of our researchers to participate in the field of social, economic, cultural, and biological planning that contributes to the development of their cities, villages, countries, and the world at large.
