Sociology is the science of our social life in all its dimensions, and it aims to expand our knowledge about problems regarding our societies and collective life. To tackle those problems, our students will not only learn about the various fields in the social sciences, but will be skilled in theoretical and methodological approaches to social science research.

By the end of their study programs, students are able to:

  • Conduct social, cultural, and economic studies
  • Manage research programs that are needed by different bodies of the state, civil society, and international organizations
  • Implement programs and social policymaking at different levels

Evaluate and monitor social plans and programs on theoretical and practical levels

Department of Anthropology

The course of anthropology was first taught by a German professor in the University of Tehran in 1937. It then developed into a centre for Nomadic Anthropology in 1957, and, finally, after the establishment of the Faculty of Social Sciences, continued as a department in which international scholars alongside Iranian professors engaged in research in different branches of anthropological studies.

Today, the Department of Anthropology is committed to fostering four main branches of anthropology – archaeology, biological anthropology, cultural anthropology, and linguistic anthropology.

Our goal is to produce researchers who can study social, cultural, biological, and linguistic characteristics of human societies within particular historical periods and geographies focusing on diverse phenomena including art, music, marriage, religion, economy, law, and various other significant aspects of our social life. At the same time, we emphasize the importance and ability of our researchers to participate in the field of social, economic, cultural, and biological planning that contributes to the development of their cities, villages, countries, and the world at large.

Department of Social Development Studies

The failure of imported and top-down development plans and policies persuaded scholars and policymakers around the world to pay more attention to the values of local communities, their needs, demands, and desires. The focus of development discourses has now shifted towards collective efforts and management, as well as incorporating cultural, ethnic, and religious values.

With the emergence of new theoretical approaches in the social sciences and interdisciplinary research, Social Development Studies as a discipline can open new horizons for sociological research in the dimensions of culture, the economy, and policymaking and can tackle issues confronted by local communities, and ultimately help towards the sustainable development of society, promoting social welfare and justice among members of communities, especially among those in the lower sections of society, rural areas, and peripheral cities.

The Department of Social Development Studies has been pursuing this aim since its establishment in 1998.

Department of Demography

The Department of Demography at the University of Tehran began accepting under-graduate students in 1973. After the 1979 Iranian Revolution and the establishment of the Faculty of Social Sciences, the study of demography was abolished as an independent program. The need of Iranian society for specialists in the field of demography and the necessity for development and improvement in the quality of education in demographics, the Department of Demography commenced its activities and opened two programs – both at the master's and PhD level.

Our graduates are able to excel at different planning and research institutes, policymaking organizations, universities, various ministries including education, statistics, planning and development, health, state agencies, NGOs, and civil society organisations that engage in or are in need for expertise in the field of demography.

Department of Islamic Social Sciences

The foundation for the Department of Islamic Social Sciences was built on an idea advocated in the Commission of Social Science in 2011, by a group of well-known scholars in the field and some faculty members.
